Part 1: Introduce yourself.
Tell us a bit about yourself and experiences with writing. You are not being evaluated; this is just to help us all get acquainted. I'll also use these to assign everyone to groups. (To make this easier: click Comment, copy and paste this list into the field, then add your responses.)
- Your name (as you prefer to be called)
- Your major and minor (or areas of interest)
- Previous experience with writing and research (for school or other)
- Generally, when it comes to writing assignments, are you more of a planner, laying out a schedule and completing tasks step by step, or a deadline pusher, procrastinating until just before the due date?
- Generally, do you consider yourself more extraverted or introverted? (This does not mean "outgoing or shy;" check out the definitions if you're uncertain.)
- Some thoughts when you hear the term "group work" (love groups, hate groups, do my best work as a collaborator, always have to do all the work, can never get a word in, like leading others)
This is designed to help you succeed in the course by understanding expectations, procedures, and policies. Everyone must complete the quiz to get blog credit, but those who answer 9 or more correctly will get a half-day's participation points (6) in extra credit.
Imagine you're the instructor for this Writ 101 course. Students come to you with the following issues. Respond to them –briefly – in a way that is consistent with the course syllabus. (Copy and paste this into your Comment field, add responses.)
- Lorrie wants to know how she may contact you outside of class.
- Anika received a check on her assignment. She asks if that's the same as an "A."
- Sherman will be missing class in two weeks because he is the first (and only) chair in the UM Orchestra vibraphone section and will be performing. He wants to know how this affects his attendance record, and if he can make up the work.
- Denis had a bad skateboarding wreck en route to campus, snapped his fibula, and missed class. Now he asks you how that is going to affect his grade.
- Leo doesn't have copies of his draft for workshop. He wants to know if he can email the draft to you tonight. You reply...
- Maxine tells you she doesn't care about grade point averages, just wants to get whatever grade she needs to avoid taking Writ 101 again. What grade does she need to earn?
- Umberto has never missed a class, completes all homework on time, and is an enthusiastic contributor to discussions. He wants to know if he can skip the final portfolio.
- Charlotte wants to discuss her inquiry project, which you gave a U due to plagiarism. She explains that she didn't mean to plagiarize, it was a copy-and-paste accident. She wants to know if you'll change the mark, now that you know it was an innocent mistake.
- Hunter rips his handwritten homework assignment out of his notebook, quickly scrawls his name in the upper right corner, and hands it to you. Why don't you take it?
- Ayn has missed three classes: first, when she figured it was just "syllabus day" and skipped; second, when she lost track of time doing a Vampire Diaries marathon; third, when she had to work. She asks if she can still get an "A."
- Gabriel's laptop fell into the Clark Fork and he wants to know where he can find a computer to use.
- Ernest says he doesn't like writing, and wants to know why he has to take this class.
