1. Read and annotate: Derek Owens’ chapter excerpt and Jess Walter essay. Focus on the way these authors engage external research in their work.
2. Write: Field Study. Choose three possible places from your invention activities and spend 10 minutes on each, doing sensory research. If you can actually visit the place, go there. If not, imagine you are really there.
a. Find a comfortable place to sit, close your eyes, and take a few minutes to pause. Pay attention to your breathing, and let your mind wander. Just be in this place.
b. First 5 minutes: Fastwrite. Describe the place with all of your senses. Cover each: what do you see, hear, smell, taste, feel?
c. Next 5 minutes: Note how being in this place makes you feel emotionally. What or whom does it remind you of? What thoughts arise as you sit here?
d. Turn this in.
3. Choose one specific place for your LPE and make a list of 20 research (primary or secondary) questions about it. Fastwrite the list. Keep writing until you’ve got at least 20. What kinds of information do you want to find about your place? Turn this in.
